He added that 95% of the sugar the country imports comes from Brazil, adding that Brazil exports domestically re-refined raw sugar, while India only exports refined sugar. It denies that sugar substitutes harm the sugar industry and the sugar trade.
Al-Ghurair added that insurance premiums for sea freight arriving in the Gulf would not exceed 0.25% of the value of the goods.
He explained that imposing a sales tax on domestically produced juices and sweetened beverages initially helped reduce demand for sugar.
Al-Ghurair said Al Khaleej Sugar’s capacity is only 40% of the factory’s total capacity.
Al-Ghurair announced that its Egyptian affiliate, the Canal Sugar Company, the world’s largest beet sugar factory, will start production at the end of Ramadan at the end of April next year.
